Info

Echoes of Pinyin is an experimental typography and publication project exploring the emotional tension Chinese speakers experience when learning English pronunciation.

The project investigates how the Pinyin system shapes phonetic understanding and creates lasting interference when encountering English words. Through research into mouth movement, tongue position, nasal sounds, and vocal articulation, I developed a custom typeface system derived from the physical gestures of pronunciation.

Using visual experiments, publication design, motion references, and printed artefacts, the project transforms phonetic anxiety into a visual language. The final outcome includes a typographic system, zine publication, posters, stickers, postcards, and wearable applications that reinterpret spoken language as emotional and bodily form.
